Thomas Henning : The Stanford Pride Oral History Project
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Thomas Henning received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford in 1989. In this interview, he shares memories of gay life at Stanford in the 1980s, including participating in activities of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of Stanford (GLAS) at the Fire House and in the Speakers Bureau. He recounts an effort to provide benefits to same-sex graduate student couples at Stanford and remembers pushing for a California ballot initiative to make same-sex marriage legal by constitutional amendment in 1999. Henning also recalls coming out to his family and reflects on how his identity as a gay man is part of his career as a teacher and how students today perceive sexual identity.
