Bibliographic information
Note | A collection of maps to illustrate the war in the Mediterranean between the Turkish empire and Venice, 1570-1573, comprising maps of the coasts, the principal islands of the Mediterranean, also of England, Ireland, and Iceland. |
---|---|
Note | Some plates engraved by Martino Rota, Domenico Zenoi and Paolo Furlani. |
Note | Primarily an Isolario. Lafreri type, probably brought together and published in this form perhaps by Donato Bertelli after Camocio's death. Also, Camocio Is said by Gallo "never (to have) engraved any map". A number of the maps were issued separately earlier. Copies of this atlas vary in the number of maps. |
Note | Frontispiece shows Mars & Neptune and a land and sea battle with " NB" (for Natale Bonifacio) beneath empty shield at bottom middle. |
Local note | Corresponds largely to listing on page 97-8 of Rodolfo Gallo's "Gioan Francesco Camocio and His Large Map of Europe Rodolfo Gallo" - Imago Mundi , Vol. 7, (1950), pp. 93-102. |
Local note | Copy includes 85 of 87 maps (lacks 16 - Liesna and 17 - Curciola). Includes 2 extra loose maps back to back, 2 - Europe and 70 - Cyprus (duplicates of those in atlas, minus the map numbers). |
Local note | Bound in new green paper with leather on spine and front cover giving title in gold lettering. |
Local note | Handwritten arabic on some maps. |
