ABC News Nightline, John Hennessy, Panel on College Athletics
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- President John Hennessy ABC's Nightline Feb. 23 that Stanford's athletic programs are kept in balance with its academics by maintaining "core values" and "insisting that student athletes are students first, that our commitment to academic integrity is always there." The program focused on a football scandal at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where the coach is under suspension because of allegations of recruiting violations. Hennessy appeared on a panel portion of the broadcast with Penn State President Graham Spanier and Tulane President Scott Cowen. When Nightline anchor Ted Koppel pointed out that Stanford's football coach made a lot more money than Hennessy as a professor, the president replied that the coach's salary is lower than at other schools. "When Tyrone Willingham went to Notre Dame, we made a decision that we were going to limit what we would pay the next football coach," Hennessy said. "We weren't going to compete at the highest levels because we had difficulty justifying it to our alumni and also to our faculty."
