Biographical/Historical | Fred J. Buenzle (1872-1946) was a yeoman in the United States Navy in the late nineteenth century. As a yeoman, his main duties were stenography and typing for officers. Buenzle also chronicled his tours of duty in the Carribean, England, and China. When the battleship Maine was destroyed in Havana harbor, Buenzle served as stenographer for the court of inquiry led by Admiral William Sampson. He worked for Sampson throughout the Spanish-American War. Later Buenzle established and ran the yeoman school in Rhode Island, and in 1901 he founded and edited The Bluejacket, a periodical that promoted high standards for enlisted men and also sought to defend their rights. Buenzle retired in California. |
