Harold K. Boyd : An Oral History on Diversity at Stanford
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Harold K. Boyd joined the University just as attention to diversity was getting into first gear. By the time he moved to the Office of Development in 1980, the University’s efforts and accomplishments were well into second gear and had reached perhaps half-speed. The interview’s chronology paralleled events in undergraduate education. Harold Boyd’s perspective from the Office of Student Affairs gives the reader a look at student life and the roles that particular faculty, for example, William Dement played in reaching out to minority students. Harold Boyd was involved in a good deal of problem solving with minority students, sometimes on his own and sometimes as a validator for a white administrator, the President on one occasion. This was also a time when white administrators were happy to have faculty and staff of color deal with minority students; Harold Boyd pulled a lot of that duty. The interview weaves themes of Harold Boyd as problem-solver, faculty resident (with his wife, Sara), student affairs professional, and member of black and white networks trying to chart the best course across a rough but, after the mid-1970s, calming sea.
