Training Wheels: You don't just learn to drive this car; you learn to trust it
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Our system, Training Wheels, encourages the user to trust and enjoy driving with their car, but it does not help them to drive only that car. The user's profile is saved to their phone and portable across all cars that support Training Wheels. When the driver gets a car of their own, they again imprint this car by opening their smartphone app and touching the door handle--but now, their profile is transferred to the car, causing the car to adjust itself to the driver’s preferences. From the moment that the driver begins to drive this new car, it will feel familiar, though not completely so: the new car will still preserve its unique character and personality though it has been customized. For example, a driver who is used to a minivan will find their new sports car to have tighter handling than they are used to, but softer handling than the car would normally have out-of-the-box. This partial customization minimizes the anxiety of changing cars and allows the driver to get used to their new car more quickly. And driver and car will keep learning as they drive. Through using Training Wheels, we have taken a new driver and helped them become an expert driver, a driver who can learn to drive any car because that car will understand them.
