Bibliographic information
Note | First edition detailed lithographed lunar map, 100x101, dissected in 12 sections, backed with linen, folded in black cover 34.5x26, with title "Beer & Madler map of moon". Wilhelm Beer a German banker and amateur astronomer with Johann Heinrich von Madler a German astronomer together teamed to measure the position of every lunar feature from a large number of fundamental control points to constructed the most complete map of the Moon at the time. Map was on a scale of 38 inches to the lunar diameter, and was based on observations made using a 9.5 cm. refractor at Beer's private observatory in Berlin. Accompanying the map is a four page Prospectus in French, "Prospectus d'une carte de la Lune, par Guillaume Beer & J.H. Maedler." in which they explain the history of the map, the techniques of observation and measurement, the scale used, etc. |
