Biographical/Historical | David A. Hamburg, M.D., has a long history of leadership in biobehavioral research and education, and inquiry into multiple aspects of human conflict. Through his association with Stanford University, the National Academy of Sciences, Harvard University, the Carnegie Corporation and Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Hamburg has worked to reduce the nuclear danger during the Cold War, and to help with winding down the Cold War altogether. In the course of these efforts he has worked with scholars and world leaders to address their attention to prevention of mass violence, both in terms of short-term measures such as preventive diplomacy, and long-term measures such as the building of democratic institutions and promoting equitable socioeconomic development. Dr. Hamburg, in collaboration with his son Eric Hamburg, a filmmaker as well as an attorney, has created a documentary film entitled Preventing Genocide: Practical Steps toward Early Detection and Effective Action, based on his book of the same title. It examines concepts, techniques, policies and practices for the prevention of genocide throughout the world. In the process of creating this documentary, they have collected videotaped interviews with twenty-eight world leaders and eminent scholars; the collection is entitled Pioneers in the Prevention of Mass Violence. |
