Denis Condon Collection of Reproducing Pianos and Rolls, ARS.0163 - Roll Inventory
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- An initial draft inventory of the piano rolls held in the Archive of Recorded Sound's Denis Condon Collection of Reproducing Pianos and Rolls (ARS.0163). The collection features over 7500 rolls, predominantly produced by Ampico, Duo-Art, and Welte-Mignon. The process of cataloging this collection in detail is now underway, and is likely to take a number of years. This inventory was produced during the initial process of unboxing the collection as it was shipped to the Archive, and arranging the rolls by label and then by roll number. The inventory is offered as an initial insight into which rolls are featured in the collection. It should be noted however that the information has not been fully verified. Titles along with composer and pianist names have not been standardized and therefore appear in different manifestations throughout the inventory. Additionally, in most instances, purely for the purposes of physical arrangement, all leading zeros within the roll number field have been ignored, e.g 0511 becomes simply 511 on the inventory. Many roll numbers also include a numerical suffix. For purposes of arrangement, these have also been removed e.g 6860-4 becomes 6860 on the inventory. Finally, some roll numbers duplicate. However, for the purposes of arrangement these rolls have simply both been placed at the appropriate point in the overall numerical order for the label in question. The parameters imposed on roll numbers are purely for the sake of physical arrangement. When cataloged, the full roll number in each instance will be utilized, including all prefixes and suffixes.
